Reporting Skills & Service Enhancement in Nuclear Medicine

Due to popular demand and interest from the nuclear medicine community, an on-line version of the Reporting Skills and Service Enhancement in Nuclear Medicine module will be offered by the University of the West of England, Bristol in April 2011.  The on-line version of this established module will be supported by a number of learning approaches, including BlackBoard, enquiry based learning, mentorship within the workplace and service improvement strategies, particular to your organisational needs.  For further information, please contact Gary Dawson (gary2.dawson@uwe.ac.uk)

2011 South West Nuclear Medicine Group Meeting: Summary

The 2011 South West Nuclear Medicine Group meeting was held at the Exhibition and Conference Centre (ECC), on the Frenchay Campus of the University of the West of England, Bristol on February 17th 2011.  The day was sponsored by a number of commercial companies and over 85 delegates from across the south/ south west attended this networking event.

The meeting provided an opportunity for delegates, commercial representatives and educational providers to discuss current aspects of nuclear medicine practice.   Oral presentations were provided from a number of centres and collaborating institutes.  A number of poster presentations were also on display from current post graduate nuclear medicine students studying at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

The 2011 South West Nuclear Medicine Group meeting was organised as a collaborative event between a number of NHS Trusts within the south / south West and the University of the West of England, Bristol.  Feedback from the event was extremely positive and there were even some Danish pastries on arrival with coffee and tea!

The annual event was an excellent opportunity for nuclear medicine colleagues across the south/ south west region to catch up and discuss developments within their Trusts.  The oral presentations contained a mix of topics, including the development of CT competencies in hybrid imaging, the appropriate use of CT in a hybrid imaging environment, mentorship in nuclear medicine, the development of a gating cardiac phantom, the provision of a one-stop cardiac shop, modelling variability between SPECT camera systems, radiation doses to infants following administration of Tc99m MAA, a national survey of parathyroid imaging and the introduction of a SPECT/CT service, new ways of learning in nuclear medicine, PET case studies and an update on the Modernising Scientific Careers Framework. 

The 2011 meeting was endorsed by the College of Radiographers CPD Now scheme and each delegate also received a certificate of attendance from UWE.  Various documents / presentations from the 2011 meeting will be uploaded to the “SWNMG 2011 meeting” forum, which can be accessed via the “forum” tab at the top of the main website page.  Streamcasts of key lectures from the event will also follow in the forthcoming days.  

The 2012 event will be held in the Exeter region and Bob Ward has kindly agreed to take up the role of organising the next meeting.

Due to a high level of interest the 2011 South West Nuclear Medicine Meeting is now full.  The organising committee are unable to take any more applications for this event.  There is a waiting list, which at the time of posting contains 5 reserve places.  The organising committee will endeavour to contact those on the reserve list, should any spare places become available.

Introductory CT Course: Places still available

UWE, Bristol still has a number of available places on the “Essential Aspects of CT” course, which runs on the 19th and 20th January 2011.  The course is aimed at Nuclear Medicine Practitioners and Radiographers who are either just beginning to use CT, or will be in the near future. 

The course is split in to two days:

Day one focuses specifically on the role of CT in Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine and offers a suggested CT competency framework as part of an individual future role development within a hybrid imaging environment.

Day two is co-delivered with a representative from Alliance Medical Ltd and provides the fundamentals of modern CT.

Each day can be taken individually if required & this course has been endorsed (CPD Now) by the College of Radiographers

HIKE Streamcasts now available

MSc Nuclear Medicine – Applications for 2011 intake

Applications for the autumn 2011 intake of nuclear medicine practitioners are now being taken by the University of the West of England, Bristol.  The programme is delivered via a blended learning approach, utilising state of the art web-based technology and problem / enquiry based learning methods.  A work-based learning approach will also be offered for the first time and builds upon the success of delivering educational / clinical based modules to nuclear medicine practitioners.

SWNMG Meeting 2011

The 2011 meeting of the SWNM Group has been scheduled for 17th February 2011.

The SWNMG meeting is an opportunity for all professional disciplines to meet, network and discuss current clinical practice.  The organising committee would like to encourage all departments within the South West, Central, Midlands and South Wales to attend this meeting and update their CPD portfolios.

Online registration now available.  Spaces are limited to 75 for this event.  College of Radiographers CPD Now Endorsement will be applied for.
